Booking and Safety Tips for an Enjoyable MTB Holiday in Tuscany

If you’d rather skip the planning, AVF runs guided 5-night Tuscany trips covering Massa Marittima, Piombino and Campiglia Marittima — see dates, price and itinerary on our Tuscany trip page. You need to provide accurate information about your physical and technical levels. It’s crucial to complete the pre-ride questionnaire and group safety information form you’ll receive before your arrival. This helps the organisers match you with the appropriate trails and services.

Safety is paramount. Always wear a certified helmet and suitable protection, like gloves and knee pads, throughout your trip. Make sure your bike is in excellent working order before the start date. If you’re hiring a bike, it should have been checked thoroughly beforehand, though maintenance during the trip will be your responsibility. Never feel pressured to ride beyond your ability—it’s better to walk a tricky section than risk an accident.

You’ll also need proper travel insurance that covers mountain biking, even in remote areas. Accidents can happen, and you want to be prepared. Ensure your insurance covers trip cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances. Lastly, full payment for your biking adventure is due 30 days before your trip. A 50% deposit is required to hold your reservation, and the remaining balance will be settled a month prior to your trip. Payments can be made via bank transfer, credit card, or PayPal.

FAQ

When is the best time for MTB in Tuscany?

The best windows are mid-April to late June (cool temperatures, green hills, wildflowers) and mid-September to late October (Indian summer, ripe vineyards, dry trails).

Is Tuscany good for e-MTB or only for traditional MTB?

Both work, but e-MTB unlocks more terrain in less time. Tuscany has long fire-road climbs to reach the singletracks — on e-MTB you ride 50-60 km/day comfortably, on regular MTB the same loop is 25-30 km. AVF runs e-MTB guided tours for this reason.

Where should I base myself for an MTB holiday in Tuscany?

For coast-and-hills riding (Massa Marittima, Piombino, Campiglia Marittima), the southern Maremma area is ideal. For pure inland Tuscany (Chianti, Crete Senesi), Siena or Volterra are good bases. Our guided trip uses one hotel in the Maremma so you wake up, ride and return to the same room every day.

Do I need a guide to ride MTB in Tuscany?

No, but trail signage is inconsistent and the best singletracks are unmarked. A local guide saves you 1-2 days of getting lost and shows you trails that aren’t on any map. If you prefer a guided experience, our 5-day Tuscany tour includes guides, hotel, dinners and bike support.

How long is the Aosta Valley Freeride Tuscany trip?

Five nights and four riding days. The trip runs in one hotel base format (no daily moves), with full van support and dinners included. See the full itinerary and 2026 dates →
